Also I found the following, which sort of struck me funny.
Many years ago I found it at the WSHS, and it is in Series 1927, Box 7, Folder 3, dated from, “The Field” March, 1863.

Hd. Qrts, 7th Wis. Vols. March 11th, 1863

To Aug. Gaylord, Adjt. Gen.

State of Wisconsin

Sir; On the commission lately received for Capt. A. Bean, Co. “D” of this Regiment, the name is wrong, being written therein “Mc Bean” – He says “that is not the kind” his name is Alexander W. Bean” – And a very good quality of Bean it is,” ---and by the way, he wishes to go home on a short leave, for the furlough purposes, he says, of sowing the seed for another crop, as he thinks the service will need more of the same sort, perhaps before the present war closes.

Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
W.W. Robinson
Col. 7th Wis. Vol.

I found this letter interesting because Capt. Alexander W. Bean still had a pretty fair sense of humor even after the fall of 62 and spring of 63. I wonder if he still had that sense of humor after Gettysburg, where, from what I read, he received his “Compliments” from the Rebs.

Sincerely
James B. Kennedy
