About COMPANY G –
The Portage City Guards

Mission Statement

Company G is a Civil War reenacting company that was formed to meet the needs of the older adult reenactor.

About Company G

As a member company of the Second Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Association, Inc., Company G is part of an Association that has been involved in Civil War reenacting since 1959.  Company G is governed by the rules, regulations and bylaws set forth by the Association for member companies.  Our uniqueness as a reenacting company is that our membership is comprised completely of older adult reenactors.

How is Company G different from any other Civil War reenacting Company?

An older adult in a Civil War reenacting group may come across many situations that are just too strenuous or demanding.  Eventually, these reenactors will leave the hobby because they feel that they can no longer keep up with the other company members.  Company G was formed to eliminate the strenuous and demanding portions of reenacting while allowing our members to use their years of experience to help educate the public about the American Civil War.

How can the members of Company G do this and still be considered reenactors?

Simple, there are many tasks that need to be performed at every reenactment.  Company G specializes at these tasks and allows our members the opportunity to participate at their own comfort level.  These tasks include but are not limited too:  Camp guard duty, drill displays, camp scenarios, educational displays, cooking displays, medical scenarios, parades, recruitment, and school programs.  However, our members will never be limited to the above tasks.  If a member wishes to take the field for a battle reenactment and can demonstrate that they are both proficient at drill and can safely handle a musket, they will be more than welcome into the ranks of the Second!

Can I join if I never reenacted before?

Certainly, the members of Company G will train you in all aspects of what you need to know to be a Civil War reenactor.
